After completing Vintage Kitchen Cabinets – Color Matching from Louisville, KY to Restoring Old Cabinet Hardware – Restoration in Louisville, KYT – cabinet refinishing in Louisville, KY. All is well under way and the cabinet restoration projects are on schedule. But my clients say I have done a “good job”. They say, “I liked your color match for restoring old cabinet hardware. The cabinets look great.
I say “good job” because it is really difficult to do quality work restoring old cabinets. The cabinets have been sitting for years and they just need a good cleaning and some minor “tweaking”. And that’s where I come in! I can’t do much more than restore the surfaces back to their original luster, but I can bring out the color and beauty of these cabinets.
Some cabinet surfaces may require a deeper cleaning and more painstaking detail restored to bring back the original luster and color. This is often necessary when the wood has been re-painted, or the hardware in the doors has been removed and then replaced with new hardware. When the color is restored it must meet the specifications of the original contractor and the re-painting process. The color might be off-white or it might be too light or dark. It’s hard to know exactly what was used in the past on these surfaces without an exact replica of the originals.
It is my practice to paint the wood with a medium color followed by a darker color. So, if the wood is light, I use a darker color such as brown. And if the wood is dark, I will use a lighter color such as the pine color in this case. We used two coats of this wood stain on the wood. We used two coats for the hardware, since we were not restoring the cabinet doors.
We had to sand the surface very well to remove all the dirt that had been there since the restoration. Then we cleaned the surface and gave it another good sanding. We then applied another coat or two of the wood stain and let it dry overnight. Then we sanded it again to get rid of any excess.
The next day we put the cabinet door back on the cabinet and put the drawer fronts back on. We then attached the hardware and turned on the lights and we saw a nice new cabinet door! It was gorgeous. The color was still correct, the hardware matched and it was looking like a cabinet door that someone had made. It was a very satisfying experience.
